Local emerging contractors get multi million rand housing contract in Cala

Twenty six local emerging contractors in Sakhisizwe municipality have been awarded a multimillion rand construction contract of building over thousand homes in Cala for unemployed people. The contractors were awarded R31.6 million rands contract to build 1289 homes in Cala and Elliot. MEC Helen Sauls-August will hand over 50 new homes built by these contractors on Thursday, 22 September 2011 in Cala extension 13 and 14 Manzamdaka.

The current scope of the houses per project is Cala Extension 13 and 14 equal 716 houses; Cala extension 15 equal to 249 and Elliot equal to 324.249 houses have already been completed.

The department appointed 26 local contractors to complete 1 289 homes in the area of Cala and Elliot. This will be the first handover of homes built by emerging contractors in the province. It forms part of a departmental plan to capacitate emerging contractors to work on human settlements project in the province. Emerging contractors are also working on other human settlements project in Mt Pleasant and Transit camp.

The department has taken emerging contractors to a construction management course in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University wherein contractors are equipped with construction management skills enabling them to complete housing projects on set time frames.

The department also has an existing into agreement with the department of public works and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation to train and capacitate emerging contractors. Other emerging contractors are trained by construction SETA.
