The Limpopo Youth Commission will be visiting Polokwane Correctional Centre on 3 August 2010 to spend the day with young female offenders. The march was in protest against the extension of passes to women by the apartheid regime; the visit to the correctional centre is aimed at the following:
- Engaging with young female offenders about interventions in bettering their lives during and post their serving terms
- Creating a platform for the LYC to communicate available programmes, their rights as inmates and above all to ensure that they use their serving terms as a rehabilitation period.
Even though South African prisons have less female inmates as compared to males, their rehabilitation should be prioritised due to the following:
- They remain primary caregivers in society
- Women struggles contribute to their unlawful actions and this must be addressed from all angles
- Post their serving terms they should be easily integrated back into their communities.
The LYC has recognised that youth development needs an integrated approach which continues to place women at its apex; hence as the commission has taken this initiative to address challenges faced by young women who happen to be in correctional centers.
