Limpopo Health department bid farewell to aspirant medical students to Cuba

In an endeavour to increase the pool of medical professionals particularly in rural areas, the Limpopo Health department will next week 19 September 2011, Monday bid farewell to 10 aspirant medical students who will be jetting-off to Cuba to pursue studies as part of the South Africa-Cuba health agreement.

During the farewell function to be held in Polokwane, the Head of Department for the Department of Health, Ms Daisy Mafubelu will give students 'marching orders' and to clarify her department's expectations on the selected students.

The Limpopo Health department has since the implementation of the SA-Cuba health agreement sent a total of 170 student to Cuba to pursue medical studies and to date 31 have completed their studies and are practicing medicine in different facilities in the province. 

About 37 students are due to complete the final leg of their studies in South Africa and will be deployed to various hospitals in the province.

"The selection of students for medical studies in Cuba is stringent and we are convinced that all will make it to qualify as medical officers at the end of the term. We cannot afford any failure and our students are fully aware of that expectation", Mafubelu said.
