Limpopo Department of Sport, Art and Culture to host public hearing on standardisation of geographical names

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will be hosting a public hearing on the standardisation of geographical names at Thohoyandou Indoor Sport Centre on Thursday, 11 February 2010.

The public hearing is organised by the Limpopo Provincial Geographical Names Committee and is aimed at synchronising and accelerating the standardisation of geographical names process, particularly around places with incorrect spelling names, multiple and duplicated names, offensive names, names that are not officially recognised and corrupted names.

The project aims at developing a common vision with regards to transformation of place names in the country, strengthening the scientific, social, economic and political case and basis for standardisation for names of geographical features. It is also aimed at encouraging all relevant stakeholders to engage in the process and for communities to participate in the decision making process by identifying and submitting place names that they propose for change or review and hence create social cohesion and a unified national identity.

The theme for the provincial public hearing is: “To transform and promote unity through the naming process in Limpopo”.
