Limpopo celebrates International Women’s Day

The Premier of Limpopo, Mr Cassel Mathale will lead provincial celebrations to observe the International Women’s Day scheduled as follows:

Date: 8 March 2012
Venue: Hayani Lodge, Polokwane Municipality
Time: 08h30

The 8th of March has been declared by the United Nations (UN) as International Women’s Day.

The UN began celebrating the day on 8 March 1975. Two years later, in 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.

The Limpopo Provincial Government has on annual basis used International Women’s Day to advocate for the empowerment of women and gender equality.

This year’s event will focus on providing feedback with regard to progress made in addressing gender equality and empowerment of women in the province.

The objectives of this year’s celebration are:

  • To create awareness and encourage maximum participation of women in municipal governance;
  • To report back to women structure in Limpopo on issues of gender equality and women empowerment;
  • To give women information on available opportunities in the public sector; and
  • To advocate for the advancement of gender equality and women empowerment in both the public and private sectors

Guests at this occasion will represent women structures such as women in agriculture, construction and mining. Other structures will represent women with disabilities, faith based organisations and young women.

Members of the media are invited to cover the event.
