Limpopo celebrates the International Day for Persons with Disabilities

The Premier of Limpopo, Mr Cassel Mathale, invites people in the province to join government during the provincial celebration of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities on 3 December 2010 at Gawula village in Giyani, Mopani District.

The main objectives of this celebration are:

  • to create awareness and educate communities about the plight of persons with disabilities
  • to encourage people to partner with government to fight the abuse of persons with disabilities
  • to encourage persons with disabilities to participate in the mainstream economy by showcasing their talents and entrepreneurial prowess
  • to encourage communities to ensure that persons with disabilities are always consulted when matters that have a bearing on their wellbeing are implemented.

Through the implementation of the applicable recruitment and selection policy, the Limpopo Provincial Government has been able to go beyond two percent national norm of the employment equity target by appointing 2,6 percent of persons with disability at senior management staff level.

On the academic front, the Limpopo government has enrolled over 7 000 learners with special needs in designated schools in the province. Government has committed to increase the number of schools for learners with special needs from 28 to 34 by the end of the current financial year.

On the social development front, almost 400 000 persons with disabilities are receiving disability grants from government in the province, on a monthly basis, to alleviate their economic hardships.

Government supports the United Nations proclamation of 3 December as the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. It is against this backdrop that following the dawn of democracy, government has enacted progressive legislation such as Employment Equity Act, Skills Development Act and the Preferential Procurement Act to enhance the plight of Historical Disadvantaged Individuals including Persons with Disabilities.
