Background

Land care is a conditional grant programme that is focused on the management of land degradation e.g. soil, vegetation and water. Government, the Limpopo Department of Agriculture (LDA) in particular will use the LandCare Day to make the public aware of daily challenge of land degradation. Deforestation, veld fires, overgrazing and unprotection of wetlands are the major contributors of land degradation, hence the need to educate the communities about the necessity of using natural resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of the current and future generations.

LandCare programme started in 1999 and is making a mark since its inception and there are various activities in its implementation:

  • awareness creation, institutional and capacity building
  • soil conservation
  • veld management
  • water management
  • alien and invasive plant control

Both young and old in the communities participate in the programme to ensure sustainability.

The media is invited to the occasion.
