Legislators from India pay goodwill visit to Presiding Officers

Parliament’s Presiding Officers are scheduled to meet the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs of India and his delegation on Thursday.

The goodwill visit follows the trip to India in July by National Assembly (NA) Speaker Mr Max Sisulu and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Chairperson Mr Mninwa Mahlangu.

The relationship between India and South Africa is that of a strategic partnership and both nations have developed close cultural and economic ties. These ties were further solidified with South Africa's 2011 acceptance into the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) group.

Mr Mahlangu, Deputy NA Speaker Ms NomaIndia Mfeketo and Deputy NCOP Chairperson Ms Thandi Memela will meet Mr Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal at 11h00 on Thursday, accompanied by NA and NCOP House Chairpersons, a number of Parliamentary Committee Chairpersons and the Acting Deputy Secretary to Parliament. Mr Sisulu is away on bereavement leave following the death last week of his brother, Zwelakhe.

A courtesy call on Deputy President Kgalema Mothlanthe has also been requested.
