Learners’ Focus Week

The Department of Mineral Resources, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and stakeholders in the mining industry, will host the Annual Learner Focus Week from 27 to 29 September 2010 in Polokwane, Limpopo province.

The programme is aimed at raising awareness about career opportunities in the mining industry and government. The purpose is to enhance training and career development in the fields of Geosciences, Environmental Studies, Chemistry, Information and Natural Sciences, amongst others.

The programme will also encourage learners to study mathematics and science to enable them to take up technical, engineering and research studies at tertiary level.

The initiative will involve learners from Limpopo, Gauteng, Free State, Northwest and Mpumalanga provinces, targeting about 50 learners per province. This means that between 200 to 250 learners, accompanied by two educators per school, will be participating in the Learners’ Focus Week.

The following organisations and companies will be presenting career and job opportunities to the participating learners: De Beers; Lonmin; Rio Tinto; Sasol Mining; Total; the Council for Geoscience; the Mining Qualifications Authority; the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA); Eskom; Anglo-American; Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC); Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA); PetroSA; Mintek and the Departments of Mineral Resources and Basic Education.
