Launch of Women's Month

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature shall host the Women's Month media launch on Wednesday, 1 August 2012, in the Noninzi Luzipho committee room @ 12h00.

The launch is organised by the Provincial Gender Machinery under the theme "Addressing Unemployment, Poverty and Inequality: Together contributing towards the progressive future for women'.

On 9 August 1956, women of different races, from all over South Africa, united together in protest against the pass laws under the Apartheid regime. On that day, a written petition against the law was handed to the South African Government, and post 1994, 9 August has been marked as a public holiday to commemorate this event, and the courageous steps taken by women across the country. As an extension to Woman's Day on 9 August, South Africa now also celebrates Women’s Month during August.

The Gender Machinery, comprised of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature's Women's Caucus, the Department of Social Development and Special Programmes and all departmental special programmes units, will officially launch the Women’s Month in Bhisho.

On this day the Honourable MEC for Social Development and Special Programmes, Ms Pemmy Majodina, shall outline the programme of the upcoming commemoration of the 2012 Women’s Month in the province.
