Poverty remains one of the key challenges facing government. Rising food prices have put a huge burden on the budgets of many poor households, but it is the poor who spend a disproportionate amount of their meagre income on food, so it hits them the hardest.
The Department of Social Development has in place a number of interventions to assist the poorest of the poor during the cold winter days. One of these is to ensure that identified vulnerable persons throughout the province are supplied with blankets and food parcels to keep them warm and to ensure that they are not hungry during period.
Identified school children will be receiving school tracksuits for them to wear during the winter months. There are also 79 soup kitchens in the province where members of the impoverished communities can receive a meal.
The youth of Fraserburg , Sutherland and Williston will also be addressed by Ajax of Generations, Zinzi of 7de and Senzo of Generations with regards to the dangers of substance abuse, the important role they play as youth in their communities and the importance of families.
The progamme will be launched by the MEC for Social Development: Mr Alvin Botes
