Launch of road safety level crossing project

Road Traffic Management Corporation in collaboration with Transnet Freight Rail and the Department of Public Enterprises: North West Provincial Department of public safety and liaison is launching the Road Safety Level Crossing Project in Rustenburg.

Due to the high incidence of fatalities and injuries at level crossings, Transnet Freight Rail has engaged the assistance of the RTMC to address and promote safety at level crossings.

The North West project is a pilot in the Rustenburg area, mainly due to the high occurrence of level crossing crashes.

“As part of South Africa’s response to the epidemic, the Road Safety Level Crossing project is one of the many projects undertaken by the RTMC in response to the “Decade of Action for Road Safety” and this joint initiative pays credence to the Decade’s thinking that road safety is a key “cross cutting” issue, with multi sector partnerships vital for its successful implementation,” said Mr Collins Letsoalo, Acting CEO of the RTMC.

RTMC appointed traffic officers will robustly engage communities in assisting with the eradication of these tragic and unnecessary incidents by obeying at all times the traffic laws governing rail level crossings.

The Minister of Transport, Mr S'bu Ndebele is delivering the keynote address and the Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Malusi Gigaba will conduct the handover ceremony. Accompanying them will be the North West Premier, Mme Thandi Modise, MEC for Community Safety, Desbo Mobono and the Rustenburg Executive Mayor, Ms Mpho Khunou.

All Media are invited to attend. Journalists must confirm attendance by no later than 13:00am (Wednesday, 12 October 2011) to: Luthando Ngilana- 071 680 3445.
