Gauteng MEC of Agriculture, Rural and Social Development, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza will launch the Provincial Child Protection Week, on Saturday 2 June, 2012, in Daveyton, amid current shocking incidents of child abuse and rape. This year’s theme is “Working Together To Protect Children”.
Objectives:
The objectives of the child protection awareness campaign are:
- To advocate for children’s rights, educate and mobilise families and communities about their responsibility towards the protection and care of children.
- To reduce incidents of Child Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (CANE) through awareness campaigns.
- To inform and educate the public on the comprehensive basket of services needed by children in their emotional, cognitive and physical development.
On the day of the event 1 500 children will march and present a memorandum of demands to the MEC. The MEC will also open a new Childhood Development Centre, in keeping with the spirit of the Child Protection Week, and as part of the provincial Bana Pele Programme (Putting Children First),

Participants: 1 500 children and 500 adult - from all 5 Gauteng regions.
Children age group: Between Four and 16 years old.
