Launch of the new Kakamas High transmission area (HTA) service site

The Northern Cape Provincial MEC of Health, Mr MS Sokatsha, will officially launch the new Kakamas High Transmission Area (HTA) service site on Friday, 26 June 2009. The event will take place at Kromhout Farm, Kakamas in the Siyanda District of the Northern Cape province.

High Transmission Areas (HTAs) are geographical regions or definable populations of people who are particularly susceptible to transmission of sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs) including HIV. The HTA service point is a definable healthcare service intervention that emphasises healthcare issues specific to the burden of the HTA.

The service point may be an entire facility, a mobile clinic or alternatively an integrated focus within an existing facility driven by a dedicated individual or team of health workers with appropriate skills and experience. The services specific to HTA is an integral part to the package of Primary Health Care (PHC) services offered by any environment confronted by HIV and AIDS. It is in this light that such a site is launched in Kakamas based on the target group identified namely the economic migrant workers from the Moshaweng area in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District of the Northern Cape province as well as other parts of the country.

The partners in this project that contributed immensely to the success of the project are the Northern Cape Provincial and District Department of Health, the Siyanda District Municipality, the Kai! Garib Local Municipality, Karsten Farm and Greenfield Management Solutions.

Other dignitaries expected to accompany the MEC of Health are members of the Provincial Portfolio Committee of Health, the Executive Mayor and Mayor of Siyanda District Municipality and Kai! Garib Local Municipality respectively, representatives from Karsten Farms, Northern Cape Department of Health and Greenfield Management Solutions.
