The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) invites members of the media to the launch of the Brazilian Indigenous seed that will be held on the 21 March 2012 in Nduli village (approximately 2hrs from Stellenbosch), Western Cape.
The launch of the Brazilian Indigenous seed project is a result of an agreement between Brazil, South Africa and Mozambique. As part of the project, a total of 100 small-scale farmers commenced training at the ARC in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. The training will continue until Saturday, 24 March 2012.
Other key participants in the project include the Trust for Community Outreach and Education (TCOE) an NGO and the Agricultural Research Council (ARC). Among others, a delegation from Brazil, representatives from TCOE, the ARC and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, as well as the 100 trainees will attend the launch scheduled for 21 March.
The ultimate vision of creating vibrant, equitable and sustainable rural communities will be achieved through a three-pronged strategy based on:
- a coordinated and integrated broad-based agrarian transformation;
- strategically increasing rural development; andÂ
- an improved land reform programme.
The fight against poverty still remains the cornerstone of government’s focus and furthermore, a new economic and developmental trajectory is required for the country to address food insecurity and general poverty in the country, particularly, in the rural areas.
