The launch of a 30 day campaign against the “hunting” of witches

The Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) is one of the chapter nine institutions established by the Constitution to strengthen constitutional democracy in the Republic of South Africa. In terms of the CRL Rights Commission Act no.19 of 2002, the Commission is charged to, amongst others,

  • Promote respect for and further the protection of the rights of cultural, religious and linguistic communities;
  • Promote the right of communities to develop their historical diminished heritage among others.
  • Foster mutual respect among cultural, religious and linguistic communities,
  • Establish Community Councils to preserve, promote and develop cultures, religions and languages of communities for which they are recognised, and advise and assist the Commission in matters concerning the achievement of its objects.

This activity takes place within the background of celebrating Human Rights month. The Commission is celebrating Human Rights under the theme, Cultural, Religious and Linguistic rights are human rights.

The CRL Rights Commission as a human rights watch dog calls urges community leaderships, CRL community councils and relevant department to assist in deepening peace, friendship, tolerance and respect for human dignity and communal cohesion among all the people of South Africa in pursuit of social justice and equality, irrespective of suspicions that would not be proven in the court of law.

This campaign is informed by the escalating problem of people in our communities being accused of being witches and in the process people are killed and their properties destroyed.
