Launch of 2010 FIFA World Cup at Correctional Services, in the presence of the 2010 FIFA Local Organising Committee (LOC) ambassadors

The Department of Correctional Services will launch the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Correctional Services in KwaZulu-Natal at the Durban Westville Correctional Centre on Tuesday, 23 February 2010, 09h00.

Matches will be preceded by an opening ceremony to be addressed by Deputy Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize, Mark Fish on behalf of the 2010 LOC ambassadors and Mark Slessenger from Ambassadors in Sport. Major highlights of the day include a soccer game between Golden Arrows and a Correctional Services team consisting of offenders and officials.

The launch in KwaZulu-Natal takes place in the context of the department’s commitment to support the 2010 FIFA World Cup by stimulating the interest of inmates in the world cup, under the theme “Where will you be during 2010 FIFA World Cup”.

“By introducing the Department of Correctional Services 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament, we intend to spread the spirit of patriotism among offenders. It’s a way of ensuring the 2010 FIFA World Cup is supported by all, including those soccer lovers who cannot be at the games. Football is a best way of mending behaviour and curbing re-offending”, Deputy Minister Mkhize said.

Department of Correctional Services will use this opportunity to announce its decision to establish Academies of Football in each of its regions as part of the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
