Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Service Delivery will from next week, 17 to 21 May embark on the last leg of its nation-wide public hearings into service delivery.
The public hearings, which began in February, came after the National Assembly’s resolution to establish an Ad Hoc Committee to conduct coordinated oversight on service delivery under the theme: “Working together to ensure the delivery of quality service to communities”.
The committee has been to six provinces already inquiring about progress with regard to service delivery and where protests took place, finding out what the challenges are.
Some of the problems that emerged during the hearings in these provinces include failure of administration; poor governance and poor financial management in municipalities.
Failure of administration in most municipalities had led to the inefficacy of systems, thus making municipalities prone to corruption; fraud; tender irregularities and maladministration.
The committee will visit the following provinces: KwaZulu-Natal; Limpopo and the Northern Cape. In these provinces the committee will meet with members of the communities, local government officials, provincial government officials, ward committees, civil society organisations and members of the business community.
Following the public hearings, the committee will table a report to the National Assembly.
