Labour Minister to engage farming community of Bethlehem

In continuing with her long running campaign to promote decent work across the country, Labour Minister, Honourable Mildred Oliphant, is this week headed for the Free State Province to lead blitz inspections on farms in Bethlehem, followed by a community Imbizo at the Bohlokong Stadium on 17 and 18 February 2012 consecutively.

The blitz is targeted at the farming community and will see teams of inspectors visiting a number of farms to check compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Sectoral Determination for Farm Workers which regulate farm workers’ working conditions and their minimum wages.

The Minister will also hold a media briefing on the outcomes of the blitz inspection on the 17 February 2012 at Frontier Inn Hotel, Bethlehem at 14h30.

The following day on the 18th, the local communities, particularly farm workers, will be able to engage the Minister on issues pertaining to their work environment at the Imbizo to be held at Bohlokong Stadium, Bohlokong Township at 9h00 in the morning.

The day long Imbizo will be also attended by other government departments including Home Affairs, Social Development, Health, South African Social Security Agency and councillors from the Dihlabeng Local Municipality. The departments will also use this opportunity to exhibit and share information about services they provide to communities.

The blitz is part of the Minister’s drive to improve the labour law enforcement programme which has covered provinces like Limpopo, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. It is envisaged that all the other provinces will be visited before the end of the financial year in March 2012.
