Labour inspectors put farm sector under scrutiny

The Department of Labour’s robust inspectors are today Monday, 13 June and until Friday taking on the farming industry to check on compliance on labour laws.

The week- long spotlight will focus on the sectoral determination for farm workers which regulates the conditions of employment of farm workers that include wages, hours of work, leave, prohibition of child labour and forced labour, termination of employment, information concerning remuneration, deductions and other acts relating to remuneration as well as written particulars of employment.

Compliance on the occupational health and safety procedures will also be high on agenda during the inspector’s scrutiny to check whether employers do not prioritise their profits before the well being of their workers.

During this blitzkrieg, besides enforcing labour laws, inspectors willalso promote sound labour relations and provides information and advice on labour laws respectively to employers and the workers through advocacy sessions.
