Domestic Workers information session in Gauteng to spell out priorities

In taking up the cudgel to improving the lives of the vulnerable workers, Gauteng Department of Labour is set to host two Domestic Workers Information Sessions to raise awareness, sensitise and interact with the workers. The move is yet another demonstration by the department to protect and improve the lot of vulnerable workers in South Africa.  

The session is initiated to engage with Domestic Workers and the department uses these session to interact with workers on matters of working conditions; general rights of workers; effects of labour legislation on the workers; and extension of social security benefits to workers such as the Unemployment Insurance Fund .

The first session will be held today 19 August 2018 at Pretoria Labour Centre at 10:00 and second one will be at Gauteng Legislature on the 26th August 2018. All sessions will start at 10:00.

As per the Sectoral Determination that governs the working conditions of employment in the sector, Domestic Workers include those who work in private household; people employed by employment services; independent contractors who are doing domestic work; a person doing gardening in a private home; people who look after children, sick, or old people and people with disabilities in a private home; and a person driving for the household.
