The Minister of Communications, General (Ret) Siphiwe Nyanda will lead the celebrations for World Post Day, in Galeshewe Stadium, Kimberley in the Northern Cape. The Minister will be joined by the Chairperson of the Board of the South African Post Office, Miss Vuyo Mahlati and the Chief Executive Officer of the State-Owned-Enterprise, Miss Motshoanetsi Lefoka.
World Post Day is celebrated annually on 9 October, which is the day that marks the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital of Bern. This year the Department of Communications (DoC) and the South African Post Office (SAPO) have planned a number of activities for the Community of Kimberley.
The department plans to showcase a number of services that people can receive through the use of Information Communications Technologies (ICTs) in the South African Post Office. It is important that communities are empowered, with special focus on women, the youth and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). The day hopes to equip the community with the knowledge of the services that can be utilised as a mechanism for development.
The South African Post Office will highlight some of these services in a bus that is a mobile computer lab.
The department has just presented in Parliament, the Post Office Bank Bill which will lead to the Corporatisation of Postbank, allowing it to extend banking services to the under-served areas especially, and encourage a culture of saving amongst citizens.
