Background
The Kamoso Awards is an annual ministerial event which was launched by the National Department of Public Works in 2007 and aims to recognise national, provincial and local government as well as public bodies who have excelled in the implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
The primary objective of the awards ceremony is to mobilise government, stakeholders and partners to increase their efforts in the implementation of the EPWP, to communicate and showcase progress, impact and the success of the programme as well as to enhance the visibility of EPWP in the broader public.
The Kamoso Awards recognises excellence in the implementation of projects from all four EPWP sectors namely, Environment and Culture, Social, Infrastructure and the Non State Sector.
The 2011 Kamoso Awards Ceremony is of a particular significance as they represent a significant milestone for the programme. With this awards ceremony the, EPWP celebrates the creation of over 2 million work opportunities since the inception of the programme back in 2004.
The persistent challenge to all Public Bodies is to increase their targets significantly with the ultimate aim of ensuring that our government fights and defeats the twin challenges on unemployment and poverty.
This awards ceremony is anticipated to raise the level of participation among all the implementing bodies of the EPWP with a special focus on municipalities, as per the resolutions and commitments made during EPWP Municipal Summit held in October 2010.
