Kagiso Trust and Free State Department of Education signs R180 million deal

Free State Department of Education and Kagiso Trust will sign a five-year memorandum of understanding to expand the Beyers Naude Schools Development Programme (BNSDP) to include a further 167 schools in the Thabo Mofutsanyana district. The signing ceremony will be held at Illanga Estate in Bloemfontein on Friday, 26 November 2010 at 08h00.

Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Enver Surty, will deliver a keynote address at this ceremony. More than 150 business executives will attend. Free State Premier, Ace Magashule, his executive council members, and National Assembly Education Portfolio Committe Chairperson, Fatima Chohan will also grace the ceremony.

“The programme will provide leadership and management skills to educators, learners and school governing bosdies (SGBs) to assist schools to be more efficient and effective. At the end of five years we hope to have turned participating schools in this project into centers of quality learning and teaching” says Free State MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe.

The Beyers Naude Schools Development Programme works with schools in rural communities to improve education and learning at the schools. The programme was launched in 10 schools in the Thabo Mofustanyana district in 2007 and has enabled the schools to improve in their governance and academic performance.

“We are really excited about this agreement. It is a sign of confidence in us from the Free State Department of Education and the performance of the schools we’ve worked with shows that the model really does work. We are very excited to be working with the other 167 schools in the district and we look forward to seeing some great results in the coming years”, says Kgotso Schoeman, CEO of Kagiso Trust.
