To commemorate national Public Participation Week, the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster of government will engage with community members in Mitchells Plain this weekend.
Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa is expected to address the people and will be accompanied by the Minister of Justice and a delegation of Deputy Ministers and high level officials. Earlier this year, Mthethwa made a commitment to the Mitchells Plain community that issues faced by the neighbourhood watches and community police forums would be addressed. This follows the murders of two community crime fighters.
The aim of national Public Participation Week is to provide a platform for ordinary citizens to interact with government, to raise their concerns and dissatisfaction about issues that affect them, and to explore solutions to remedy them. The engagement is also aimed at government building strategic partners across all communities and stakeholders. Suitably then, the theme for this year’s Public Participation Week is, “working together we can do more.”
The visit by the JCPS cluster will look specifically at the issue of crime across the Cape Flats, with representatives from all communities expected to attend in their numbers. Representatives from all community police forums and police stations throughout the metropole have been invited to attend.
Public meetings have been taking place throughout the Western Cape as part of National Public Participation Week; some of the other areas already visited by delegates from provincial government include Wellington, Gugulethu and Atlantis.
