Joint Committee meeting on local government performance

Portfolio Committees on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and Public Service and Administration will tomorrow (5 September) hold a joint meeting to hear how the country’s Local Government MECs (from all nine provinces) intend improving on their 2010/11 audit outcomes.

These Committees will also get a briefing from the Public Service Commission on the assessment of recruitment and selection practices regarding Section 57 Managers (managers directly accountable to the Municipal Managers) and Municipal Managers.

This follows the Auditor-General’s (AG) report which revealed that only 13 of the country’s municipalities received clean audits. According to the AG report, there was an increase in the number of municipalities which failed to meet the 31 August 2011 deadline for submission of financial statements. The figure went up from nine municipalities in 2009/10 to 40 municipalities in 2010/11.

The report further states that disclaimer opinions decreased from 77 in 2009/10 to 55 in 2010/11.
