Johannesburg Central Regional to select team for the provincial indigenous games

With Provincial Indigenous games beckoning in September, the Johannesburg Central region will this weekend select a team ready to dominate the games during the heritage month. Only the top achievers will be selected into the regional team with the hope of further making it into the Gauteng provincial team for the national games later this year.

Participants will compete in activities including kgati (skipping), dibeke, morabaraba, ncuva, morula, juskei, intonga (stick fighting), diketo and khokho.

The indigenous games programme is aimed at cultivating and promoting cultural and recreational activities that have for decades been part of the growing up of a lot of people particularly within communities which had limited facilities. Their revival is hoped at having a growing impact on South Africa's social issues including the restoration of African cultural identity and diversity.

"With September being heritage month the games happen are important as part of efforts to keep our nation healthy. They also ensure preservation of our heritage and culture. These games help in reinforcing good values and interaction between communities and between the different generations," says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile.
