'On the Job' Built Environment launch

Media is invited to attend the official launch of the “On The Job” Built Environment Training Programme as follows:

Date: 25 September 2012
Time: 15h00 – 16h00
Venue: PRASA House (1040 Burnett Street, Hatfield)

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Mduduzi Manana, will officially launch PRASA’s “On The Job” Built Environment Training Programme as a result of a partnership between the Passenger Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

This initiative will offer “on the job” training to students in the built environment sector and would form part of PRASA’s preparations for the acquisition of the new rolling stock (trains) over the next 20 years. This will be carried out through PRASA’s Real Estate Management Unit, PRASA Corporate Real Estate Solutions.

The partnership follows a proposal by the Deputy Minister Manana to make sector skills training and development a priority especially the built environment as is one of the critical areas that have been deemed to be experiencing a shortage of in-depth skills in South Africa.

Working with the post-school learning institutions, PRASA and DHET have identified 40 students, between the age of 21 - 35 from previously disadvantaged communities who have made it through their academic training programs to be employed on PRASA’s Built Environment and Training Programme.

These students would be employed for a period of three months, during which they would receive supervision from experienced professionals in the built environment. The identified areas of training for the first phase includes: B-Tech Architecture, B-Tech Construction Management, and B-Tech Quantity Surveyor.
