Cabinet will set the national agenda at its annual January Lekgotla – the most important session of the National Executive – in Limpopo from Sunday, 16 January to Thursday, 20 January 2011.
The meeting, which will provide the basis for President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address on 10 February, will give direction to Government’s programme for 2011, a year in which South Africans will also participate in local government elections.
Cabinet will assess the global and domestic economic outlook with a view to the prospects for increasing employment in the country.
Job creation is a key priority for Government alongside health, education, safety and rural development – all of which will form part of the planning discussions at the Lekgotla.
The global security context and an international relations programme for South Africa, informed by factors such as the country becoming part of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China) group of nations, forms part of the Lekgotla agenda.
The Lekgotla entails deliberations among Ministers and Deputy Ministers on the first three days of the meeting at the Legend Golf Safari Resort, followed by two days of discussions in which Premiers and Directors-General will participate.
President Zuma will officially close the event on Thursday, 20 January.
