The National Treasury is holding a media workshop on 22 October, before the tabling of the medium term budget policy statement.
The workshop will focus on two documents: the National Treasury’s 2011/12 Debt Management Report and the Tax Statistics released annually by the South African Revenue Service.
The 2011/12 Debt Management Report was released on 18 September 2012. The report contains useful background for context and helps increase understanding of debt management by National Treasury.
The workshop will help the media understand:
- Evolution of government debt management
- Debt issuance processes and instruments used by the government
- Government’s debt portfolio, holdings and investor trends
- Financing activities for 2011/12
- Funding strategy 2012/13
The Tax Statistics document is usually released with the Budget in February and will, for the first time this year, be released with the MTBPS.
Officials from SARS will focus to explain:
- the value of the Tax Statistics to government, business, economists and market analysts
- how the statistics are compiled
- an analysis of the SA tax base in terms of race, gender, regions, provinces.
