Background to tariff announcement

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele appointed a Task Team to provide advice on whether the proposed amendments to the 2010/11 - 2014/15 Permission were appropriate, following the ACSA Permission application process and the subsequent pronouncements on tariffs by the Regulating Committee. The Ministerial Task Team has since completed their report which detailed certain critical areas that needed to be dealt with before the Permission could be finalised.

The Minister issued a letter to the Regulating Committee on 28 January 2011 informing them of the outcome and requesting them to engage ACSA and the industry in resolving the matters. The Minister has since received a revised Permission from the Regulating Committee.

Following from this process, it is clear that broader review of the economic regulatory framework within the transport industry, including the aviation sector, is necessary to enable more predictable, transparent and balanced economic regulatory frameworks going forward. This will play a critical role in the facilitation of the implementation of the integrated transport master plan.

The Director-General will pronounce on the final new tariffs for 2010/15 and other relevant matters at this media briefing.
