The Commission for Gender Equality (‘the CGE’) is an independent statutory body created under Chapter 9 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act 108 of 1996 (‘the Constitution’). The CGE has a mandate to promote and protect gender equality in government, civil society and the private sector.
To this end, the Commission on Gender Equality Act No. 39 of 1996 gives the CGE the mandate and the powers to educate, monitor and evaluate policies and practices of organs of state at any level, statutory bodies and functionaries, public bodies and authorities and private businesses, enterprises and institutions in order to promote gender equality and make any recommendations that the CGE deems necessary.
On 27 September 2011 the CGE is inviting all provincial stakeholders and interested groups in gender equality, transformation and development to attend a report back and way forward session on the Commission for Gender Equality’s implementation of its mandate and functions as stipulated in the Constitution of South Africa and the CGE Act. On this day the CGE will elaborate on both national and provincial work it has undertaken for the past financial year and deliberate on its strategy for the next three years.
This engagement is intended to open points of entry for all stakeholders and interest groups to strategically engage with the CGE on the implementation of its functions and how to strengthen networking and collaboration on these.
As a stakeholder in gender development and transformation you are invited to attend or send a representative to this session. Details are as follows:
