Invitation to carnival base camp tour

The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation invites members of the media to the carnival base camp tour in Norwood for a great photo opportunity.

The construction of floats and seamstresses are at an advanced stage and the tour will serve as a platform to monitor the progress as part of the build up towards the main event.

Hundreds of community members in Alexandra and surrounding areas are benefiting from the base camp through skills development and job creation in preparation for hosting the 5th Annual Gauteng Pale Ya Rona Carnival.

Of the six base camps around the province the Spark Gallery Norwood is the main one where over 300 costumes and seven large ones are being designed and produced. The main costume is over eight meters tall and two meters wide.

Carnival is part of the creative industries strategy which is aimed at developing the creative industries to contribute to economic growth, job creation, community development and urban regeneration. The event forms part of the Heritage Month celebration. The details are as follows:
