International Women's Day Celebration

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government, the Department for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities (DWCPD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UDP) will host a two-day event in Pretoria, 8 to 9 March 2012 to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) under the theme: “Connecting Girls and Inspiring Futures”.

International Women’s Day, marked annually on 8 March, is an occasion for countries to honour women for their economic, political and social achievements and to share best practices with  regard to overcoming the challenges in achieving women’s empowerment and gender equality.

The aim of this event will be to honour the achievements of women on the Continent and to facilitate intergenerational discussions and mentorship amongst women with a view to inspire future women leaders.

Some of the highlights will include the Intergenerational Dialogue under the topic: “Women in Leadership: Sharing experiences and celebrating success”.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, WCPD Minister Lulu Xingwana and Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, will be among the women to lead this dialogue.

Participants at the event will include: women Ministers of the Republic of South Africa; women Members of the Gauteng Executive Committee; Members of the Diplomatic Corps; senior officials of national and provincial governments; national and provincial gender machineries; women from the SADC countries; representatives of Progressive Women’s Movement; political parties; student organisations; religious groups; business organisations; media houses; children from girls homes and young girls from designated groupings.
