International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – 17 October 2012

The persistence of poverty calls for the development of innovative and sustainable community-development and poverty-eradication policies, strategies and programmes that not only create opportunities for sustainable jobs and income generation, but that will also harness and strengthen resources within households and civil society to achieve sustainable livelihoods.

Eradicating poverty is the highest priority on government’s effort to build a better life for all. And therefore as part of celebrating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty which is commemorated annually on the 17 October, the Department of Social Development in partnership with the National Development Agency will be announcing the progress made on the 10 funded projects for Early Childhood Development, Enterprise Development and Food Security.

The Department of Social Development will also launch the Greenpoint Drop Inn Centre which will serve as a service centre where the community of Greenpoint will have access to a basket of developmental services which can positively impact their livelihoods. The Reducing Poverty: A decade of Achievement Report: 2000 -2012 will also be launched by the Acting Premier Ms Grizelda Cjiekella and she will be accompanied by the MEC for Social Development Mr Alvin Botes at the same event.
