As a way of strengthening the efforts of ensuring the safety of children in our community the Eastern Cape Department of Transport Special Programmes Unit will hold the International Children’s Day Commemoration at Duncan Village Taxi Rank on 28 September 2012.
International Children's Right's Day is a day recognised by the United Nations and is observed every year and this year’s theme is “Campaign for safety of children in Taxi Ranks”.
The aim of the campaign is to promote an understanding of Children`s Rights issues as prescribed in the constitution.
The Constitution of South Africa in section 28 in the Bill of Rights of Children forms the basis for best interest of the child in all matters affecting the child.
These rights aim to protect the child from abuse and neglect up to the age of 18 years and this initiative will ensure that the department contributes to the following.
- Safety of Children in Roads and Taxi Ranks.
- Reduce escalating numbers of children roaming and staying in Taxi Rank.
- Child abuse
- Drugs and substance abuse
