Inter-Governmental Relations Forum Launch to improve access to Sport & Recreation facilities

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture together with the City of Joburg's Community Development Department will on Friday launch the Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) forum.

The forum is in line with the Intergovernmental Relations Framework ACT of 1995 which seeks to promote corporative governance as espoused by Chapter 3 of the Constitution of South Africa.

This piece of legislation seeks to set up mechanisms and systems to coordinate the work of government to provide services, alleviate poverty and fight under-development.

It also promotes the establishment of structures and lines of communication between local, provincial and national government. "Despite the division of government into different spheres, the public sees it as a single entity which should deliver everything for all, says MEC Lebogang Maile.

"The forum, which has been seating regularly since the beginning of this year has been hard at work deliberating and finalising on the integrated plans which we hope will contribute to improved planning system that will allow government to achieve more", adds MEC Maile.

Clr Chris Vondo, a Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, says the new forum will add to the City's vision as contained in the Joburg 2040 strategy. The Joburg 2040 Strategy is an inspirational strategy that defines the type of society the city aspires to achieve by 2040.

"Improving access to sporting and recreational facilities will assist us to realise the principles contained in the Joburg 2040 strategy, where we see sport as a catalyst for achieving social inclusion at all levels of our society. By opening up our facilities we also encourage communities to take ownership of these spaces, and therefore building safer and healthier environments that will make all of us proud to live in this great City of Johannesburg," says Clr Vondo.
