Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) makes an announcement on the licensing of radio frequency spectrum for the purpose of providing a mobile television (TV) service

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa invites all interested parties to a media briefing for the official announcement on the licensing of mobile TV spectrum.

On 16 April 2010, the authority published the invitation to apply (ITA). On 7 May 2010, the authority received four applications from Multichoice, Mobile TV Consortium, Super 5 Media and e.tv.

The first three applications were disqualified for failing to comply with the preliminary requirements as provided for in the ITA and the mobile television regulations. e.tv was therefore further evaluated since the company made it to the next round of the application process.

On 28 May 2010, the authority published another ITA in order to fully license the MDTT1 multiplex. The authority received two applications by the closing date (28 June 2010) from Super 5 Media and Multichoice in response to the second ITA. The two applicants complied with the preliminary requirements.

"Council evaluated the applications in accordance with requirements as stipulated in the mobile television regulations and the ITA and we are now ready to make a formal announcement to license spectrum for the provision of mobile TV in respect of the first and second ITA", says ICASA Chairperson, Dr Steven Mncube.

The media briefing will be held as follows:

Date: 10 September 2010
Time: 10h00 to 11h00
