The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) Chairperson, Paris Mashile, makes an official announcement of geographical names portability

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa hereby gives notice and invites stakeholders and the media to the announcement of the second phase of geographic number portability for individual customers.

Geographic number portability, also known as fixed number portability, is the ability of fixed line customers to switch from one fixed line operator to another without losing their fixed line numbers. This process became effective from 18 May 2009.

The geographic number portability was to be implemented in two phases with the first phase only dealing with blocks of 1 000 and 10 000 numbers and more (i.e. mostly corporate customers), and the second phase was to deal with individual numbers (i.e. mostly for residential customers).

In terms of the regulations, porting of individual customers was to take place within 10 months following the implementation of the first phase. However, the authority issued a notice on 17 March 2010 informing all stakeholders and the media that the implementation of the second phase was to be postponed to 26 April 2010 due to technical challenges as reported by the industry.

The authority hereby invites all stakeholders and the media to a briefing on the implementation of the second phase of geographic number portability.

The announcement will be held as follows:

Date: 22 April 2010
Time: 09h00 to 10h00
Venue: Block C presentation room, Pinmill Farm, 164 Katherine Street, Sandton
