Independent Communications Authority of South Africa celebrates the World Telecommunications Day

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) recognises the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, which is celebrated on 17 May each year. The theme for this year is “Women and Girls in the ICT.

The Electronic Communications Act (ECA) empowers ICASA to provide for the empowerment of historically disadvantaged persons including black people with particular attention to the needs of women, opportunities for youth as well as people with disabilities. ICASA is of the view that availability of communications services such as internet, telephones and broadcasting, require availability of infrastructure in order to close the digital divide.

In celebrating this day, ICASA would like to make the public aware of its programmes aimed at ensuring equitable Information Communications and Technology (ICT) services to all. Such programmes will include licensing processes that women and girls can benefit from, application for multi-purpose centres, which can provide skills to use internet and other opportunities from postal services.
