The Northern Cape Provincial MEC of Health, Mr MS Sokatsha, will officially inaugurate the Northern Cape Provincial Health Council on 21 July 2009. The event will take place in Kimberley in the Frances Baard District of the Northern Cape province.
The Northern Cape Department of Health applies a multi-sectoral approach to health issues and thus is launching the inaugural Northern Cape Provincial Health Council. The establishment of the Provincial Health Council is in line with chapter five of the National Health Act no. 61 of 2003.
The council will be made up of a dynamic team of highly committed members from community structures and organised sectors like non-governmental organisations (NGOs), youth, and faith based organisations, district municipalities, traditional healers and leaders, representing all our diverse communities in the province.
The provincial health council will advise the MEC on:
- policy concerning any matter that will protect, promote, improve and maintain the health of the population within the province
- proposed legislation relating to health matters before it is introduced to provincial legislature
- norms and standards for the establishment of health establishments
- guidelines for the management of health districts
