Hundreds set to participate in the provincial Indigenous Games

This year's Gauteng Provincial Indigenous Games are set to attract magnitudes of young people across the province and also promises to be bigger and better. Young and old from Gauteng's five regions will participate in an effort to vie for provincial colours during this year's tournament to be held at Cecil Old Ridge Stadium, Vanderbijlpark on 25 July 2009.

Participants will be competing in codes such as Dibeke, Khokho, Diketo, Ncuva, Intonga, Kgati, Morabaraba and Jukskei. The games will serve as a platform to select a provincial team to represent Gauteng in the National Indigenous games to take place in Kwazulu Natal in September.

The indigenous games is a project that is aimed at promoting cultural activities that have particular appeal to vast sectors of the South African communities, particularly in rural and urban areas communities who are still passionate and value their traditional recreational activities.

“Participating in Indigenous Games emphasises physical development, skill training and maintenance. It also reinforces the values and interaction between communities,” said MEC Nelisiwe Mbata-Mtimkulu.

The revival of these games impact on social issues which including economic growth, accessibility of resources results in restoration of African cultural identity and diversity.
