Hospital enables two year old deaf boy to hear for the first time

Tomorrow, the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development will unveil the first paediatric cochlear implant at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital’s audiology and Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) department performed this implant on 2 year old boy, Monthati Makofane on 1 July 2009. The cochlear implant will be activated tomorrow and this will be the first time that the boy will be exposed to sound.

The cochlear implant is a device that is a surgically implanted into the inner ear and is able to bypass the damaged hearing pathway in deaf individuals.

Monthati, his parents and the team that performed the surgery will be available to share Monthati’s story as well as answer any questions relating to the implant. Previous recipients will also be available.
