Honouring our teachers

The cream of the country’s teachers has gathered in Pretoria for the week long adjudication of the annual National Teaching Awards (NTA) this week.

Now in its 13th year, the NTAs are an opportunity for the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to acknowledge and pay tribute to our dedicated, committed and professional educators and their efforts to develop learners as citizens of a democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa. These awards also provide the perfect opportunity for the whole of South Africa to publicly thank and celebrate these heroes and heroines whose work contributes to the development of all other professions.

The national adjudication taking place this week is the culmination of a process that starts out with schools nominating teachers and principals who go above and beyond the call of duty. Nominees progress from district finals to regional/cluster finals to provincial finals and the national award winners are determined at the national adjudication.

In 2012, the National Teaching Awards ceremony will be held on 23 February 2012 at the Sandton Convention Centre. The event will be televised live on television and President Jacob Zuma has been invited to deliver the keynote address.

The awards are divided in to eight categories:

  • Excellence in Primary School Teaching;
  • Excellence in Secondary School Teaching;
  • Excellence in Primary School Leadership;
  • Excellence in Secondary School Leadership;
  • Excellence in Grade R Teaching;
  • Excellence in Special Needs Teaching;
  • Excellence in Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET);
  • Lifetime Achievement Award.

Adjudication runs from 23 January to 29 January 2012 at the DBE headquarters in Pretoria.
