Home Affairs to bid farewell to Minister Dlamini Zuma

The Home Affairs Department will host function in honour of and to bid farewell to Minister and Chairperson of the African Union Commission Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma at the St. George’s Hotel in (on R21)in Pretoria on Wednesday, 12 September 2012. 

Minister Dlamini Zuma was appointed to the Home Affairs portfolio in 2009, which was her third deployment to the cabinet of South Africa having previously served as Minister of Health and Foreign Affairs under the leadership of successive Presidents Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema Motlanthe and now Jacob Zuma.

Minister Dlamini Zuma is credited with having brought about fundamental transformation of the Department of Home Affairs resulting in a caring, effective and efficient service delivery levels while taking its rightful place as a security department within the JCPS Cluster of governance.

Under her watch, the department of Home Affairs achieved an unqualified audit opinion in 16 years since the dawn of peace, democracy and justice; launched the online fingerprint verification system; delivered on its mandate and guarantees to FIFA to ensure a safe and secure 2010 FIFA World Cup through the introduction of integrated movement control system, advanced passenger processing system and deployment of airline liaison officers to major international airline hubs. Minister Dlamini Zuma also introduced the notion of involvement of members of the public in direct processes of governance through the establishment of the Home Affairs-Stakeholder Forums throughout the country. It is to her credit that the department recently launched the pilot of the new Smart-ID Card which is expected to be rolled out to the public next year.

In bidding her farewell, the department of Home Affairs joins millions of our people across the country and others in the continent and indeed the world who wish her well as the woman Chairperson of the African Union Commission in 49 years.

As a department we reiterate our conviction that in making her available to serve the people of our continent, both South African and indeed SADC have made available one of the finest and best daughters our country has produced convinced that she has the ability, will and the passion to help advance the cause of the political and economic renewal of the continent of Africa.
