As a form of celebrating the start of a New Year, during New Year’s Eve, Hillbrow residents have become famous for throwing heavy objects from their upstairs flat apartment’s balconies and firing guns. Heavy objects such as old fridges are often seen flying from high-rise buildings.
The Department of Health in conjunction with the provincial Department of Health and Social Development and civil organisations are activating a campaign aimed at curbing such a practice which has a huge potential of resulting into human injuries which automatically leads to high number of patients at health facilities demanding medical attention during the festive season.
This campaign forms part of the National Department of Health’s Prevention of Trauma and Injuries campaign for the festive season.
The Prevention of Trauma and Injuries campaign commenced last week Sunday, 18 December 2011, at Moloto road where Health Deputy Minister, Dr Gwendoline Ramokgopa, donated First Aid Kits to community members residing adjacent Moloto road. Community members were also given basic training on handling human injuries in the event of a road accident.
