Higher Education briefs Parliament on Budgetary Review and Recommendation Report, 14 to 17 Oct

Higher Education Committee to be briefed by the department and entities

The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training will be briefed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) as well as its entities this week (14 to 17 October) as part of the Budgetary Review and Recommendation Report (BRRR) process.

The meetings, which will also see the Office of the Auditor-General attending and making a presentation on their independent analysis of the department’s performance, will take place over four days in Parliament.

The Committee will today (14 October) receive a briefing by the AG on the 2013/14 audit outcomes of the department and its entities, including the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), Council on Higher Education (CHE), South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) and the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

This will be followed on the subsequent days by briefings by the Department as well as its entities from Wednesday to Friday.

Committee Chairperson Mrs Yvonne Phosa said: “In terms of our budget oversight role, the BRRR process is an essential mechanism as it assists the Committee to ascertain the balance between the non-financial and financial performance of the department and make recommendations on the reprioritisation of the budget where practically possible to strengthen the performance of the post-school education and training.”
