High performance computing facility launch

The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Derek Hanekom, will launch the high performance computing facility at the North West University’s Potchefstroom campus on Monday, 26 October 2009.

The high performance computing facility was established in response to ongoing demand for computing power, particularly in the field of natural sciences research. It will greatly enhance the university’s capacity to deliver research excellence ensuring that it remains one of the country’s top research institutions.

The facility opened its doors at the beginning of this year and to date almost 1 700 research assignments have been completed. Feedback from researchers has been very positive, with some reporting that they have completed, in two weeks, projects that would previously have taken up to two years. These significant time-savings imply acceleration in the progress of many important programmes.
