High-level panel discussion on the role of science in global sustainability

The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will deliver a keynote address at a panel discussion that will explore how science and technology can provide solutions to meet emerging challenges regarding global sustainability in sub-Saharan Africa.

Hosted by the International Council for Science (ICSU), in partnership with the University of Cape Town (UCT), the event brings together renowned experts, educators, development agencies, and scientists working on global environmental change research in a range of disciplines.

This panel discussion will take place on 1 November 2012, from 18h00 to 20h00, in the lecture theatre at the John Day Zoology Building, UCT.

The panel discussion will be organised as part of a three-day interactive workshop that will be held from 31 October to 2 November 2012, to discuss Future Earth, a new 10-year research programme on global sustainability that is being established by the Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability.

This alliance includes the ICSU, the International Social Science Council, the Belmont Forum (a group of funders of global environmental change research and international science councils), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, the United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations University and the World Meteorological Organisation (as an observer).

The programme will deliver solutions-oriented and integrated research on global environmental change and sustainability issues. For more information on the event go to: www.icsu.org/future-earth
