Health Minister calls for more physical activity

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has called for more physical activity as South Africa joins the rest of the world in marking Move for Health Day tomorrow. The Move for Health Day seeks to alert the world to the dangers of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which are on the increase world-wide.

"I have raised this issue in the past and I will continue to raise it as I did in our budget vote speech in Cape Town recently. NCDs are on the increase in our country and the point that we are trying to put across is that most of these diseases are preventable through simple things such as physical activity (exercise)", said the minister.

The Department of Health in partnership with a number of civil society organisations including NGOs like Diabetes South Africa, CANSA and the Sports Institute have organised an event in Qwa-Qwa (eastern Free State) geared at raising awareness around non-communicable diseases and the importance of healthy lifestyles. The event is scheduled to be addressed by the minister, his deputy Dr Gwen Ramokgopa and others.

Members of the media are invited to the event scheduled to take place as follows:
Date: 10 May 2012
Venue: Phuthaditjaba stadium (Qwa-Qwa)
Time: 10h00
